Can Recruiters Work from Home and STILL Be Successful

Can Recruiters Work from Home and STILL Be Successful I work from home, I employ someone to work from home and I am still (relatively!) successful. So, how does it work for me but not for so many? What is the secret of successful working from home as a recruiter? How many of you are reading this whilst sat in the office (hoping the boss cant see that you are on Undercover Recruiter)?  Stick your hand up if you are in your home office reading this at your leisure? Should recruitment businesses advocate home working? Has this worked for you in your role or do you wish your employer would get wise to the growing trend of home based recruiters? Read on for some tips! How do I do it? I am often asked how I cope working from my home office â€" something I have always been proud of! I go out and visit  100% of my clients and candidates, as I have always viewed paying for an external office as something of an unnecessary extravagance. I believe there is an advantage to me being flexible meeting candidates where is convenient to them rather than me telling them to come to me! Those who have set up their own consultancies have turned to me for advice and guidance and have asked how I have stayed motivated and ensured I am successful even though I do this from a 5th bedroom and not from a plush Spinningfields (or the like) office! Should you do it? I think to be able to work from home successfully as a recruiter, as an employee, you need to do the following: Have a separate work space This is  so you can close the door and have your work time. I have strict rules I don’t go in the office on the weekend (except for the kids to use the PC to do their online homework). It also means that when I am in the office, I shut the door so I am not distracted by the “home” issues (ESPECIALLY the permanent pile of washing!) but I am in a room that is “work”. Create a pleasant working space that you feel comfortable in, as you would in any office, but ensure it is a work space. Its not a good idea to share the space with an ironing board or the kids toys. My office is strictly work although I do allow the kids to write me encouraging messages/draw pictures on a designated part of my white board (ahhh, how sweet!). Set strict work hours for yourself Ideally aim to switch off otherwise it becomes tempting to turn on at 6.30am and off at 10.30pm. Whilst that is great as a one off (I did this the other day), I wouldn’t encourage it as a norm as it will result in burn out very quickly! Don’t allow work to creep into actual home Although I can boast that I have managed offers whilst at the park/school gates/on holiday etc, I would suggest you stick to your home office where possible! Get out and about as often as you can This is to ensure you don’t become isolated by your own home. Arrange your appointments in logistical sense so it is a valuable use of your time if that means working from head office once a week to ensure you are up to date with company status then so be it. Update your line manager once a day (as a minimum online) so that they can see what you are doing and they know the trust has been rewarded accordingly! Work for an employer who has invested in the cloud Just so you can update if you are on the go a lot! Should you let them do it? If you are an employer considering home workers: Ensure you have invested in and tested a cloud based system so your home-based employee can access all the systems but equally so you can monitor their activity accordingly. Only make the home working available for those who a) have earned your trust, b) have shown they are self motivated to just get on with it and c) set some clear targets to assess after 1 month, 3 months etc. Arrange regular visits to your home based staff on ad hoc basis to ensure they are working efficiently. Be available when they need you. It works for them! I asked the owner and MD of a recruitment business, Thomas Brandrick of Domus Recruitment (which employs a number of home based recruiters), how he ensure this works best for him and his employees: It works extremely well for us and enables us to bring highly experienced recruiters back into the industry that would have otherwise been lost. The average amount of years of recruitment experience per consultant at Domus is 11years and many simply can’t do the normal hours demanded by traditional set ups and at the same time feel they have the self discipline to manage themselves and don’t need authoritarian, KPI heavy management or alike. Self discipline for me is the key. If you aren’t truthful with yourself and make yourself feel comforted by having admin day after admin day, you won’t make it work! When I started Domus from home before we grew, my boss was guilt! If I hadn’t put it in, in the way I knew I should, I gave myself a hard time and made sure I came back in with an aggressive plan of attack. What any home worker should focus on is ‘staying close to the money’! If your activities have too distant a return on investment, they are the wrong ones. From an em ployer’s perspective the question other businesses ask me is how do you make sure people don’t take the database and do it for themselves, but I think this is a product of the ‘MI6’ atmosphere that I’ve experienced in previous employment and this paranoia will hamper the facilitation of good people needing work/ life balance or being able to run and efficient low cost model. You, the employer, being in recruitment, should be able to profile people and gain two way trust enough to make good decisions. It’s worked for me albeit that we now have an office and a mixed model these days, but my proudest achievement to-date is making £1.24 million in my old basement! Who shouldn’t work from home? Those who NEED the company of others to bounce ideas off and have banter with. Those who need to be monitored still, ie. Still learning how to recruit. Anyone who needs micromanaging or needs to be told what they are doing Anyone who has blown their employers trust. Go for it? It isn’t easy working from home. I know myself how hit and miss it can be when hiring people who will be homebased but it really isn’t for everyone. However, in an ever changing world of cloud integrated databases combined with constantly developing mobile technology I firmly believe that the OPTION of homeworking should be made available, ESPECIALLY to working parents/mums who HAVE to work and NEED that extra flexibility. But that is a topic for another blog- if that subject interests you, have you joined my group on LinkedIn, “Working Mums in Recruitment”? Come over and say hi.

Three Tips To Build Your Self Confidence

Three Tips To Build Your Self Confidence A lack of confidence affects women of all ages and rarely is there ever a quick fix. Confidence is something that you need to build. You need to find fresh perspective, develop on meaningful relationships in your life and learn to accept your shortcomings. While this article won’t walk you through the whole process, it might give you an idea of how you can start to build your self-confidence: Identify why you don’t feel confident Is it only in certain situations when you don’t feel confident, or do you lack confidence all of the time? For some people, poor confidence is directly related to a flaw that they are embarrassed about. For example, a woman might be confident in every aspect of life but doesn’t feel confident enough to play sports because she is unfit. If you can clearly identify exactly what it is that damages your confidence then that might be something you can address. If it’s a lack of confidence concerned with a certain skill you could look into educating yourself and learning more about this skill. Certain physical conditions and ailments can be embarrassing and affect your confidence, which is something that most doctors would be happy to address and help you overcome. For example, if you don’t feel confident revealing your legs in public because of varicose veins you could look into having varicose vein surgery in London and your confidence might improve as a result. However, while these specific issues can be addressed, other issues can’t be gotten rid of as easily. If your lack of confidence interferes with your most aspects of your life and you can’t identify where it comes from, a different approach is needed. When a lack of confidence comes from low self-esteem, the challenge of improving your confidence is going to be that much more difficult. Argue with your inner dialogue For a lot of people, low self-esteem and poor confidence comes in the form of a nasty inner voice. This inner voice challenges your perception of reality and tells you that you aren’t good enough. While a lot of people tend to try and ignore these intrusive thoughts and push them at the back of their mind, the only way to get rid of them for good is to address them and work through them. So, when your inner voice starts to challenge your confidence you need to challenge it in turn. For every negative thing it says to you, you need to find something positive to use to counteract it. For example, if your inner voice tells you that you aren’t good at your job you need to think back on times   when you excelled at what you do, times when you were praised, and why you were hired for the job in the first place. You shouldn’t allow other people to put you down and you definitely shouldn’t put yourself down. Don’t back down from a challenge or a chance to prove yourself When it comes to careers and professional achievement, a lot of women suffer from the unforgivable mistake of thinking that they aren’t good enough â€" that someone else could do a better job than them. This is evident in early education when studies found that, while many young boys will tackle a difficult question head on, most young girls will give up without trying due to the fear of failure. When this behaviour is carried into the work place, it results in women taking a step back rather than pushing forward when a challenge comes their way and by doing this they miss out on the opportunity of proving their deprecating inner voice to be wrong. If you want to improve your confidence you first have to come to terms with the fact that there is a lot that you are capable of without being aware of it. To do this you need to take risks, face scary challenges and find out for yourself just how talented and intelligent you are. It will be frightening at first â€" maybe even overwhelming â€" and it won’t always end in success, but facing challenges is a necessary hurdle if you want to become a confident person. . New feature on Brazen Careerist Twentysomething

New feature on Brazen Careerist Twentysomething Ryan Healy will write a new feature on Brazen Careerist called Twentysomething. Presently, he is working at his first job out of college, at a Fortune 500 company, and thinking of starting his own company (of course). I met Ryan through Brazen Careerist. He told me he was starting a blog with his friend and he asked for some guidance. I read the first post on his blog Employee Evolution before he had even set up a way to subscribe, and I liked it so much that I asked him to email me when he posted again. When I read Ryans posts, I found myself thinking, I should write about that topic. And then I thought to myself, Wait. I cant write that. Thats a topic for a twenty-two-year-old. So I asked Ryan to write on Brazen Careerist so someone is addressing all those fun topics that Ryan dreams up that I couldnt really steal, even if I tried. I have already learned a lot from him. In todays post Ryan writes about a blended career. You can see in one of my comments that I appropriated his phrase before his post was even published. Im looking forward to picking up a lot more from him as we go along.

Writing a Career Resume - Tips For the BeginnerThe first step when you are writing a career resume is to do your research. This may seem obvious, but people forget about this vital step and often end up with a resume that fails to make the grade. A career resume must stand out from all of the other resumes and get noticed. This can be done through having the right information, a good cover letter, a professional, professionally designed resume and a list of references. It is very important to begin with a career resume and begin to research the company you are applying for. There are many options available on the Internet. They have sections dedicated to various types of careers. Things to prepare for if you are going to an arts uni - Debut

Things to prepare for if you are going to an arts uni - Debut This post was written by an external contributor.  Olivia Church reflects on her own experience to share some words of wisdom for prospective arts university students. Illustrations by Katie Brookes. Sometimes, you only get a feel for a place once you experiencing it for yourself. You may not always be fully prepared for what’s to come.  Enrolling at a university  that specialises in the arts, however, teaches us all lessons that can’t always taught in the four walls of a lecture theatre. There is a certain way to life around an arts uni campus that is quite unlike other universities. There is a sense of genuine curiosity and unity among students where both friendships and working relationships can blossom. As a uni leaver this year, I’m will be miss being able to advantage of the environment and opportunities. The purpose of this article is to make you aware of the little things that often go unnoticed. Some of these may end up having a bigger impact than you might expect. Heres what I think prospective arts uni students should be aware of before they come to university. Pricey Printing First, they ask us to pay for tuition fees and then they make us pay for our own printing! It’s a cruel world indeed. Anyone coming to arts uni should always be prepared to have a sizable chunk of print credit available and photography students, this couldn’t be more true for you! Finding the right paper density and printing techniques will be your new-found obsession. If you find, that you aren’t getting the best deal at your uni, have a look around your local area for printing companies. Some may even offer student discount and boast a wider range of paper, finishes and framing options. Vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters While each of these groups sound a bit like the houses you’d find at Hogwarts, arts uni students are becoming increasingly conscious of the impact their eating habits have on the environment and animals. Veganism is constantly on the rise and avocado eating was just the start of it all. There are constant petitions for the canteens and on-campus food shops to provide more food options and a never-ending battle on prices. If you are considering going vegetarian, vegan or anything else, look in to the steps you ought to take in order to healthily adjust to a new lifestyle before you take the plunge. Gay community get ready! There could not be a more safe and accepting environment for young gay people than an arts uni. Everyone on campus in general is increasingly aware of the sense of diversity on campus and aware of the stigma that gay people face. With new LGBT initiatives being launched at universities up and down the country, significant progress has been made in welcoming people from the gay community where they can study hard and play hard as much as the next person. Social and political activism Any student who goes to an arts university will soon learn that students are highly sociable and politically-minded people and rightly so. A morning of tree planting or a film event to highlight the impact of plastic on our shores wouldn’t go a miss at an arts uni. Students are super passionate about incentivising others to join their cause and raise awareness of current issues. It’s surprising how these topics can even infiltrate in to everyday conversation and engage students from all walks of life. Fresh and funky fashion I remember waking up at some unholy hour one morning to get ready for a trip to London. I didn’t bother too much with my make-up and hair and I assumed everyone else would do the same. How wrong I was. After a quick short cut through my uni, I found a line of people ready to board the coach in blue eyeliner, pink fur jackets and freshly tousled and twirled hair â€" and even the girls made an effort! An arts uni is always full of trend and culture conscious students no matter what time of day you finally end up in uni. It’s likely that you won’t be leaving the house unless you wearing your staple pieces. Where that be a retro jumper you found at a vintage sale or a pair Doc Martin’s. Ignorance is out, knowledge is in What you know about what is going on beyond campus really counts when it comes to creating great work. You may take inspiration from a new Alexander McQueen documentary. Or you might be influenced by iconic album artwork from the 70’s. Building upon your own understanding will undoubtedly put you in a stronger position than some of your course mates. Some of them may end up being your competition! It will also help you to build confidence  and even collaborate on projects with other like-minded people. Now isn’t a time to be shy about entering competitions either as this can really help when it comes to making a portfolio and showing it off to potential clients. In any case, if you’re prepared, then that is half the battle. Download Debut  and  connect with us on  Facebook,  Twitter  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

5 Steps To Start Creating A Portable Career So You Can Work Wherever You Want To Live - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

5 Steps To Start Creating A Portable Career So You Can Work Wherever You Want To Live Do you want to create a location independent lifestyle? Are you an expat dreaming about exploring new countries or an expat partner looking to create a career around your international life so you dont have to reinvent yourself every time you move? Then a portable career is an option for you! This type of career is based on your skill set, gifts, values and first of all the vision of your desired lifestyle. And with the help of the technology, you have many opportunities to take your career with you. You can coach people on different challenges via Skype, teach languages online, create online programmes, build websites, organise Yoga retreats, become a virtual assistant, freelance writing … and much more. You can combine all your passions and create multiple income streams. In today’s post, you will find some tools which will help you get clear about your portable career idea. Your life vision. The first step is to understand how do you want your life to look like? How do you imagine your life in a host country or the country you dream to live? Where do you want to travel? Where do you want to live? How would you like to start and finish your day? What would your ideal work hours be? How are you going to structure your day while travelling? When you are clear about your life vision it is much easier to match your dream career with your desired lifestyle. So take a few minutes or hours and answer the questions above. Get clear on your skills, gifts and talents. What are your skills, your experience, and interests? How can you use your skills to serve others? How can you connect the dots and create a portable career based on your skills, interests, gifts, passions? For example, I wanted to build something based on my international experience, my background in psychology, recruitment, career advice and customer service and I came up with career coaching for expats. Ask yourself: What are my natural gifts and talents? What comes naturally to me? Very often we take those gifts, talents or activities for granted. We may even think that there is nothing special in those gifts, tasks that are also simple for others. It can be very misleading. Take a moment and make a list of 10 things, activities, tasks which are very simple for you for example like organising files, writing a copy, networking or making connections, helping others to choose an outfit. Your clients. Who do you want to serve? Think about who can pay you for what you have to offer? Who can pay you for your skills, gifts and talents? Who are your clients and what are their challenges? Do your research. Write down your ideal client avatar. Remote work. When creating a portable career you dont have to focus only on building an online business. There are many companies who are employing remote workers. Remote jobs allow you to work from home or places around the world. You dont have to be in the office. You can work as a Social Media Manager, Website Designer, Writer, Translator or Customer Service Rep. Those are some examples. Once again do your research and explore your options. If you are thinking about creating a portable career/business and you want more tips and resources get Take Your Career With You Interview Series 27 interviews with worldwide experts, online business owners, expats and digital nomads. You will learn from leading experts who are sharing with you their secrets about building their portable careers and businesses. Click here for more info. Take your actions, go brainstorm your ideas, map out your life vision and explore your skills. Think about your potential clients or how can you add value or help people, organisations or companies using your gifts. Start with a small step. Improve your resume using these tips -

Improve your resume using these tips - Last week, I had a chance to join CNN anchor Fredricka Whitfield on the air to provide tips for job seekers. We went over some before and after resumes.   Heres part 1 of a several-part series dedicated to brushing up and improving your resume. Review these suggestions to see if there are any changes you may want to incorporate in your resume. OLD HEADER Jill Jack 123 Main Street â€" New York, NY â€" 212-555-0000 â€" Jill.Jack@hotmail.com Objective Innovative, highly motivated, dynamic team player with extensive experience, stellar writing skills and the ability to effectively manage concurrent projects seeks opportunity to contribute in Fortune 500 Company. Whats wrong with this header? It does not include social media references, and relies on an old-fashioned email address. (While I, personally, dont discriminate against an AOL, or Hotmail address, it can make you appear a little dated and not in tune with modern technology.) Consider a Gmail account, with the added benefit of a Google profile. I do not recommend using an objective. Your objective is to get the job. Use that space to include headlines and bullet points describing your fit for the job. In addition, the objective here uses overused words (innovative, highly motivated, dynamic extensive experience). These words are not very descriptive; avoid “empty” words in your resume. It doesnt have a clear focus or specific job goal. Its difficult to tell here, but the font is Times New Roman. Consider choosing a more updated font, such as Trebuchet, Verdana, Calibri or Tahoma. NEW HEADER Jill Jack 123 Main St. â€" New York, NY â€"   212.555.0000 â€" JillJack@gmail.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/JillJack â€" @JillJack â€" gplus.to/JillJack â€" JillJack.com Multimedia Manager Communications Strategist Content Developer Market savvy, writer/editor experienced in producing profitableonline, video and ezine content. “Jill combines a flair for the creative, an intuitive understanding of market trends and consumer needs with her unbeatable technical, writing, editing and management skills. I’ve never known anyone who can evaluate the landscape, design a strategy and execute on plans as well as Jill.” â€" Peter Pan, Overseeing Editor, XYX Company (View this and other endorsements via LinkedIn) Whats better about this header? It incorporates social media URLs â€" indicating this person is involved online and up-to-date. By inviting the reader to review her Twitter stream and LinkedIn profile for additional information, its clear (no matter how old this job seeker may be), the candidate is an early adopter (showing a Google+ account) and clearly willing to learn new things. Only showcase these URLs if you are using social media professionally. However, dont assume no one will find your Twitter and other social media outlets. Notice this resume includes a link to the job seekers personal website/social resume. Having this online portfolio really demonstrates she is using technology and is up-to-date. This header uses important resume “real estate” at the top of the document to hone in on important points: job titles and key skills. It avoids “empty” words that don’t describe a connection between the candidate and the job. It’s important to select KEY words from job descriptions, company websites and LinkedIn profiles from others in your industry. It includes a recommendation from someone found on LinkedIn. This is a great way to help tell your story and to prove your qualifications from an outside perspective.
